McCandless doesn't like socks, he can't stand to wear them, but he wears them to his work. I think he needed to leave a place as fast a as posible before he get's too comfortable and forgets about his odyssey.
McCandless just wears socks so his feets dont smell nasty when he goes to work... and i think he wanted to leave as fast as he could because he was probably just getting tired of that place.
